Barbara the hen

I’m Barbara the hen and I live at the Farm Animal Sanctuary in Evesham, UK. I was rescued from a ‘free-range’ egg farm at just a few years old. I was going to be killed because my eggs weren’t the right shape anymore. This is normal for my age, but the farmers don't like it, because the buying public don't like it, so millions of healthy hens like me are killed each year.

Being at the sanctuary is like a dream to me – previously at this ‘free-range’ farm I was trapped indoors with thousands of others, and hadn’t ever seen the sun or walked on grass. We didn’t know the meaning of free! Now I’m loving life. I like to explore, burrow in the soil, bathe and eat fresh vegetables.

You can adopt Barbara for just £25 (inc p&p) a year. Your pack will include: a letter, personalised A5 certificate, 6x4” colour photo supplied in a cool magnetic frame and one update. Half of your donation will feed and care for her and the other half will go to Viva! UK to help save thousands more lives – animal and human – through campaigns against factory farming.
