Laura the Hen

Laura and her friends were rescued from a factory farm last year. However, they are the lucky ones. Without the intervention of Dean Farm Trust, Laura would have been left caged for her entire reproductive life, living in desperation and frustration. It has taken a while, but finally Laura’s feathers are growing back after being aggressively pecked at by other upset and distressed hens. Sadly, some of her friend’s feathers are so badly damaged, they will never grow back.

Laura was bred to produce more than 300 eggs a year. In the wild, she would only lay around 20 eggs in this time. Because of this unnatural demand on her body, Laura and her sisters often suffer from reproductive-tract disorders, weakened skeletal systems and nutritional deficiencies. Because she was seen as a commercial commodity, nobody took the time to care for her individual needs or rights.

Now, Laura is safe at Dean Farm Animal Sanctuary, she is free from her cage and able to roam happily in the fresh air and sunshine, expressing natural behaviours, such as nesting, perching, scratching and pecking. Laura especially loves playing with a ‘cabbage on a string’, always showing her inquisitive and lively nature. With your help, Laura will continue to shine, helping lead the way for her other rescued friends to a happier way of life.

You can adopt Laura for just £25 (inc p&p) a year. Your pack will include: a letter, personalised A5 certificate, 6x4” colour photo supplied in a cool magnetic frame and one update. Half of your donation will feed and care for her and the other half will go to Viva! UK to help save thousands more lives – animal and human – through campaigns against factory farming.
